geology - LANDFORMs [dictionary]
______________________________________

       ABYSSAL PLAIN - The ocean floor offshore from the continental margin, usually
           very flat with a slight slope ; INDEX - physical geology - geography

       CALDERA - A large circular volcanic depression, often originating due to
           collapse.

       CINDER CONE - the most common type of volcano that produces a conical hill close to
           a volcanic vent. The resulting structure is comprised almost entirely of loose
           volcanic fragments, ash, and pumice; S.A: Strombolian eruption; SYN. SCORIA CONE

       COMPOSITE VOLCANO - a conical volcano built up by many layers of hardened lava,
           tephra, pumice, and ash ; SYN. STRATOVOLCANO

       CONTINENTAL SHELF - The part of the continental margin from the coastal shore to
           the continental slope; usually extending to a depth of about 200 meters and
           with a very slight slope ;

       FAULT-BLOCK MOUNTAINs - portions of the earth's crust that have been displaced
           and tilted along high-angle normal faults in tensional stress zones ;
           eg. Basin and Range Province of Nevada

       FOLDED MOUNTAINs - Mountaineous terrain resulting from erosion and dissection of
           portions  of the earth's crust that has been folded and thickened ;
           S.A: complex mountains - Alps, Himalaya's, Appalachian's.

       ICE SHEETs - are dome shaped glaciers that flow from a central region.

       KAME - A short, steep-sided knoll of glacial sediment ; INDEX - physical geology
           - geography

       LAVA DOME - a landform that occurs when highly viscous (rhyolite,dacite) lava
           "erupts" from a volcanic vent and solidifies ; SYN PLUG DOME

       MAAR VOLCANO - a low relief volcanic crater that often creates a "crater lake".

       PIPE - the vertical tube or pipe-like intrusions that may feed volcanoes

       PLUG DOME - SYN LAVA DOME

       RIFT - A long, narrow crack in the entire thickness of the Earth's crust, which
           is bounded by normal faults on either side and forms as the crust is pulled
           apart ;

       SCORIA CONE - SYN. CINDER CONE

       SHIELD - complexly deformed and metamorphosed crystalline basement rocks,
           generally of Precambrian age ; S.A: craton

       SOLIFLUCTION LOBE - a land feature found on hillsides undergoing solifluction ;

       STRATOVOLCANO - SYN. COMPOSITE VOLCANO

       TIDEWATER GLACIER - a valley glacier that flows all the way ocean.

       TUFF RING - SYN MAAR VOLCANO

       UPWARPED MOUNTAIN - a terrain feature produced by broad arching or upwarping
           of the crust or of vertical uplift along high angle reverse faults.
           S.A: Black Hills, SD ; Adirondack Mtns, NY

       VALLEY GLACIER - originate high in the mountains that flow down a valley ;
           SYN. alpine glacier
